We all know that without the fun parts of life it would be hard to enjoy living. Recreational activities are so important for exercise, stress relief, and building personal relationships. At Home of Hope our mission is to support our clients as they experiment and forge their own pathways to independence finding their joy in life.
Home of Hope takes great pride in our activities programs that offer events and opportunities for people with all levels of ability. Activities take place in our homes, at our activity centers, and in the community. From dances to game days, movies, bingo, ice cream socials, and crafts, there is always something going on with a focus on healthy activities and healthy choices. Community trips include the movie theater, sporting events, museums, theme parks, zoos and many more!
Home of Hope’s equine program has grown in just a few years from a few riders to more than 60 individuals who ride or otherwise interact with and care for the horses each year. Home of Hope hosts an annual fun-filled riding event for all of our riders to compete and for family and friends to have the opportunity to come and cheer them on.
Home of Hope provides equine-assisted activities to contribute positively to the cognitive, physical, emotional, and social wellbeing of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. A disability does not have to limit individuals from the health, education, sport, recreation, and leisure benefits of riding horses.
Research shows that horseback riding helps boost strength, balance and other skills for adults with a range of physical and developmental disabilities. Riders have shown to make meaningful gains in various areas including motor function, posture, gait, and quality of life.
Experiencing the motion of a horse can be therapeutic because horseback riding rhythmically moves the riders’ body in a manner similar to a human gait. Riders with disabilities often show improvement in flexibility, balance, and muscle strength.
The program also includes unmounted activities that teach horsemanship and care of horses such as grooming, nutrition, and caring for tack and other riding gear.
Learn More About Our Equine ProgramOne of our greatest sources of pride is that Home of Hope has one of Oklahoma’s largest and most successful Special Olympic programs in the state of Oklahoma, with over 100 athletes competing each year. Some of the events we participate in are swimming, equine, bowling, bocce, golf, basketball, softball, cheerleading, and track & field.
